How to Judge the Quality of Mechanized Charcoal

The quality of mechanized charcoal depends on the following aspects:
1. Charcoal Moisture Content: (%)
Take an undried charcoal sample, weigh it, then place it in an oven preheated to 105-110°C and dry until all internal and external moisture has completely evaporated. Weigh again and repeat several times until the sample weight stabilizes. The ratio of the lost weight (i.e., water weight) to the original charcoal sample weight (%) is the moisture content of this sample.
2. Charcoal Volatile Matter:
The gaseous products released when charcoal is calcined at high temperatures — including carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, methane, and other hydrocarbons — constitute the volatile matter. It is generally expressed as a percentage content. Its meaning is: after weighing an undried charcoal sample, heat it at a high temperature (950±20°C) until all the volatile matter within has completely decomposed and escaped. The ratio of the weight loss to the weight of the charcoal sample before heating is the volatile matter content of the charcoal. If the moisture content is removed, this gives the volatile matter content on a dry basis.
3. Charcoal Ash Content:
The white or grayish-white substance remaining after charcoal has completely burned in oxygen or air is called ash. We usually use ash content to measure charcoal quality. Its meaning is: place the charcoal sample in a pyrolysis furnace at 900-1000°C for calcination, then introduce oxygen or air to allow the carbon within to completely disappear. The ratio of the residue weight after weighing to the original sample weight is the ash content of the charcoal.
4. Fixed Carbon Content:
Through laboratory methods, subtract the measured moisture, ash, and volatile matter from the total weight. The ratio of the difference to the original charcoal sample is the fixed carbon content. Its value increases as the calcination temperature of the charcoal rises. The carbon content of charcoal is generally around 80%.
5. Calorific Value:
The calorific value of charcoal represents the amount of heat released when charcoal burns completely. Its magnitude is related to the carbonization temperature. The higher the carbonization temperature, the higher the relative carbon content, and the greater the calorific value. Generally, the calorific value of charcoal is approximately 7,000 calories per kilogram.
